Just had an email to say my parcel from the US has cleared UK customs. Going on previous experience one or two of three things will happen.

1. It will arrive.

2. I will get a letter demanding VAT, import duty, and handling charges.

3. It will mysteriously disappear somewhere in the last few miles of its journey.

It woyld be nice if it's option 1. But it's usually option 2 then 1. It had better bloody not be option 2., then 1, followed by 3.

A flow chart is available as a pdf if that needs further clarification.

Edit...
Option No. 2 happened this morning. It is alleged the option No. 1 will happen on Tuesday.

Unfortunately I once had 2a): I never actually received the letter demanding VAT and duty and onerous handling fee and it proved impossible to extract the relevant information that would've enabled me to pay the damn charges out of Parcelfarce. Because you need the reference number on the letter to pay it and if you don't have that magic number then tough. They sure as hell won't give it to you! Because, well, it's in the letter!

I'd forgotten that possibility. I had that happen once, annoyingly they tried to turn it around like it was somehow my fault.

Did you eventually get your parcel?

I never did, because I decided to cut my losses. The thing was that this was a part of a larger delivery which some muppets in the US had forgotten to put into the parcel. As I couldn't pay the VAT the little parcel with the missing item went back to the US and paying for shipping and VAT/taxes to get it redelivered wasn't worth it in the end, especially considering that the first part of the delivery was a bit disappointing to start with.

Good to hear it was Option 2 with you. Although 1 of course would've been preferable.

Option 1 never happens from the USA any more :-( unless the company is sufficiently geared-up for international orders and can pay the tax their end. There are a few US companies that can do that.

On the other hand, Chinese companies seem more than happy to send me hundreds of £s worth of components and put £5 on the costumes form.

Parcel Farce once lost my package after I paid the tax, import duty... Eventually they found it, not before they told me I couldn't get a refund even though it was lost, because it was tax and not a delivery charge.
