I'm astounded! [Dec. 18th, 2008|02:39 pm]

I've been doing some rough costing of the bedroom build in my head after a trip around the DIY stores. Prices of wood based materials seem to have doubled since I completed the living room build. Going to pop into Alsford (a proper timber merchants) this afternoon to get some prices that include cutting and delivery.

I've just about had enough of Homebase, no plywood at all, and just empty shelves where every nut, bolt, screw, length of wood I want should be... But they do have a ton of plastic tat.

Homebase is terrible and vastly overpriced. They seem to be moving away from actual DIY and into 'homewares' (i.e. plastic tat). B&Q is definitely better.

Thank you... "homewares" that's the very word I was trying to think of.

I don't know why I keep going back to Homebase, force of habit and a poor memory I guess.

Y'know IKEA? just coast thru the store till you get to the Bargain Corner (usually near check-out) They have loads of pieces of finished wood, doors, laminate etc etc for 50p each.

Hmmm.... I hadn't thought of that there could be useful bits to cannibalise. I'll take a look after Crimbo.

Thanks for the tip.

Have you tried Jewsons? We got our wood for the bookcases delivered and we thought their prices quite reasonable

Some people would take advantage of that... I'd be tempted to take my elastic tape measure along.

Of course, if you were a true artisan, you would be able to utilise pallets, finish and cut them, tongue and groove them and make up your own sheets. Or even, stroll along a wooded path, select a tree, knaw it down (you would have forgotten to bring your trusty, dodgy american copy of a swiss army knife), and have the most exquisite timber to then paint over at your discretion!!!!
Ain't I the bitch? Oh sh-t, there goes my christmas spirit!
