I have book myself two, one day courses with HM Revenue & Customs Advice Team.

One is "Becoming Self Employed" and the other is "Self Assessment for the Self Employed". Although I'm putting most the form filling in the hands of my accountant, I thought these may help me avoid any pitfalls and help with my record keeping, and hopefully there will be free tea and biscuits.

As I recall from when I was self-employed the main thing is to pay your £2-a-week Class 2 NICs (£2.40 if you're a share fisherman!). :-)

If only! My NI has just doubled. I was paying the class 3 as a man of independent means... now it seems they want both and a bit on top. I sent the letter to my accountant. Frankly it's all this stuff that must put so many people off trying to work for themselves. I remember being told by someone who worked in what was the old inland revenue that the government really would prefer that there were no sole traders. "More trouble than they are worth in tax" was the quote.

Rant over... My happy thought right now is... I've just booked our Wad Fest tickets.

Is the journey there and back, overnight stay and the course itself tax deductable? What about loss of earnings, will they pay you an allowance for that too?
I'm shit hot at these reclaim your expenses lark!
Ooooh, what about the "respectable suit" you need to buy to attend said course?
Oh yes, and your interpretor, he will need his fees cos you don't speak "finance", its a language all on its own.

It's a ten min walk from my place, I'll be wearing the Mr Rimmell trademark combat trousers and black T-shirt. Or if I want to make an impression I may opt for a pink taffeta ball-gown ;-)

I'm attending the course because I don't speak Tax... I do speak a little Business but with a terrible accent and only really make myself understood by pointing and a little mime.
