Spam in my comments boxes... [Jan. 8th, 2011|02:11 pm]
Mark Rimmell
I'm getting just a little fed-up with deleting this stuff... I want to keep access open to friends who don't have LJ accounts and I would prefer not to have screen comments, it keeps stuff instant and right up to the second and because it's nice live somewhere you don't have to lock your door.

So when I found yet another bit of spam advertising products that claim to make bits of the male anatomy bigger (it's always that sort of product), I decided to fire off this email.

Dear sir or madam

Thank you for choosing to use my blog (markrimmell on livejournal) to advertise your products. Unfortunately I have had to remove your first advert because as of this date we have not received payment from your company for this advert. We will not be charging for the period the advert was active this time, as terms and conditions are not displayed on the blog. However we now put you on notice that if you place further adverts in the comments boxes on the blog, they will be deleted and there will be a removal fee of $1000 (US) for each unauthorised use of this facility.

Should you wish to book an advert we would be happy to run one, in the form and location of the aforementioned unauthorised one, for the very reasonable fee of $500 (US) per year, providing your products are licensed for use in the UK and the Websites your advert links to do not breach the ASA codes of practice (http://www.asa.org.uk/) in the UK or any similar laws, codes of practice in the territory in which they are hosted and/or the territory of targeted consumers.

I include the notification of the unauthorised advert below for your information.

Yours faithfully

Mark Rimmell

I can certainly see that it is satisfying to send off a mail like that. However, I am afraid that the only thing it will accomplish is to slightly increase the value of the email address you used to send the mail for spam purposes, as it will now be a validated address.

The only marginally useful thing to do in this case is to mark the comment as spam when you delete it and hope that the people at LJ will see the rate if spam as enough of a problem to try to filter it out.

That's why I used a crash and burn email address. I've found their snail mail address in Canada, so they are getting a hard copy.

If they spam me here again I will issue a bill.

Snot fair!

I've never had any LJ spam. What do I have to do to get some?

However, this thread is still going - 62 comments now!

Just when I think it's all gone quiet, another mate of the band loyal fan pops up to tell me I'm being too cruel to the rock stars...

I have a Permanent Account here... I should make it screened I guess. If I get any more of this crap I will do that for none friends. I guess they are using a bot to post to as many blogs as possible. email spam is pretty much plugged now, or at least hidden from view . I hardly ever see any of this unless I look in the spam folder on gmail. I forward most of my email through gmail now. I guess the spammers need to try other means.
