Gutted! [Jul. 22nd, 2012|08:50 pm]

I was cleaning paint off one of my ebay fireplaces this afternoon... and I cracked it! D'oh! It's not damaged beyond use, and could be welded. Still I'm pretty miffed about this.

A bit of Chemical Metal should fix that.

You can either grind out the crack into a V shape, so there's a big enough gap to get the stuff in - maybe back it up with a wodge of Chemical Metal on the B-side.

Or heat up Chemical Metal and it goes runny, like lead. In that state it can be persuaded into any crack.

Come to that, you could maybe use lead. I've got a nice length of Edwardian lead pipe you can have. Period materials!

Jo's just googled the problem to Hell and back, and come to the conclusion we need JB Weld. JB Weld has been ordered and I'm staying well away from the other fireplace.

However... I'd say "yes please" to the lead pipe for another project I'm working on.
